I don't know how to make sense of the fact that three years to the day of your death, Bob, your partner of 25 years, is rehabilitating in the same place you were up until your death. I followed him to the physical therapy room and saw a whisper of you in each patient that worked hard to stand up a bit straighter and to walk a bit stronger.

There is no answer, no magic bullet, no potion “out there.” For a long time I believed I took up all the wrong kind of space in this world. I judged myself, harshly, based on the double digit size of my pants, and I felt “less than” because I didn’t live up to society’s expectations of how I should appear, or my own. Reading this one book didn’t eradicate this belief, and I still have plenty of tough days, but this one book did remind me there is something better than “endlessly pushing the boulder of obsession up the mountain.”

I had a sense of the truth of Tolle's words. I seek joy from external sources: people, places, possessions. Yes, I do. No wonder I end up disappointed, and as Tolle says, frustrated. I’ve been looking for joy in the wrong place!
